back to my lace glove photo
Here is the pattern I used for my glovie project.

I've given my original gloves to a friend,
so these instructions are more general
since I didn't have the exact gloves
to remember how I designed them.

General Procedure

First I knit about eight inches of the Bird's Eye Edging for the lace trim. Then I pick up 80 stitches from the long straight edge.

I knit around, and around, and around with double pointed needles (size 0) following the Tiger Eye Pattern and the Eiffel Tower Eyelet pattern, arranging them together so they look nice.

After I knit about seven or eight inches of that, I cast on 15 stitches for the Bird's Eye Edging and start knitting the other end's lace trim while binding off the Tiger Eye/Eiffel Tower part at the same time.

BIRD'S EYE EDGING

This is the test swatch I made of the lace trim.

<=== In this picture, the pattern I got from a knitting book is on the right end of the swatch. I thought the original was too big, so I altered it to be smaller. The version I used is on the left side of the swatch.

The gague I measured was 8.5 rows per inch. This gague is the same for both the original and altered versions.

To get eight inches of lace trim, 68 rows are required (8.5 rows X 8 inches = 68). So...

Small: It takes 12 rows to complete a small point, so a point is about 1.4 inches long. To knit about eight inches of lace trim, knit six points (or 72 rows). This is a little more than necessary (four rows to be exact), but it's close enough for me!

Large: It takes 16 rows to complete a large point, so a point is about 1.9 inches long. To knit eight inches of lace trim, knit for points (wouldn't that look funny?). This is a little less than necessary (four rows), but it's close enough... I really recommend the smaller pattern.

<=== Here you see two different patterns. The top one is for the smaller version I used, and the bottom one is for the larger original version.

This is a garter stitch edging, so never ever purl unless it's above a double yarn-over or unless it's a pearl two together.

For the increases at the ends of rows 3 and 5 (and 7 for large version) I knit into the front and the back of the stitch.

TIGER EYE PATTERN

For the front of the glovies, I used the Tiger Eye Pattern from that sameknitting book.

The gague I measured from this test swatch was:

16 rows/inch

11.75 sts/inch.

EIFFEL TOWER EYELET

For the back of the glovies I used the Eiffel Tower Eyelet pattern (also from the knitting book).

This test swatch had a gague of:

14.12 rows/inch

9.21 sts/inch.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Rows 2-6: k4, p1, (k5, p1) until 1 st remains, k1.

Row 7: k1, yo, k2 tog, (k4, yo, k2 tog) until 3 sts remain, k3.

Rows 8-12: k1, p1, (k5, p1) until 4 sts remain, k4.

ARRANGEMENT

<=== Click on the picture for a full size view.

This is how I arranged the Eiffel Tower Eyelet pattern around the Tiger Eye Pattern. The left and right ends are connected to make a tube.

And the odd rows have been omitted for simplicity's sake.

Book Credits

The patterns I pieced together for these glovies are from Barbara G. Walker's "A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns." I checked the book out at my local library.
